Detector Sounds & Interference

Audio Alerts

When a target is detected, the GoldHunter produces sound through the internal speaker or through connected headphones. Adjust the volume at any time using the +/- volume buttons on the smart control unit.

Volume and Target Proximity

Signal volume is related to how close the target is to the surface, not just its size:

ScenarioSignal
Deep target, large objectQuiet signal
Deep target, large vs. small at same depthSame volume
Shallow target, small objectLoud signal

A large deep target produces the same volume as a small shallow target — use Target ID and pin-point depth to distinguish them.

Noise and False Signals

The detector may pick up unwanted noise and produce false tones, incorrect Target IDs, or constant sound even when no real target is present.

Sources of Noise

  • EMI (electromagnetic interference) — caused by nearby overhead or underground power lines, electric fences, computer systems, fluorescent lights, electric motors, or other metal detectors.
  • Ground mineralisation — high levels of iron minerals in the soil create false signals.

Recommendations

  • Avoid using the detector indoors or near electrical devices.
  • Keep the detector at least 15 metres away from other metal detectors.
  • Learn to ground balance in All-Metal mode to minimise soil mineralisation noise.
  • In difficult conditions, lower the Sensitivity/Gain and Threshold — you may lose some depth but will be able to continue searching.
  • When using Discrimination mode in noisy conditions, set the discrimination level to 60–70 to filter out most EMI-triggered false signals.
